Janine Tugonon champions true beauty as Avon's newest endorser

MANILA, Philippines - Janine Tugonon’s performance during the 2012 Miss Universe pageant, much like her beauty, captivated the imagination of Filipinos here and abroad. Social media went crazy as supporters cheered her on as she moved into the Top 16, Top 10, Top 5 and eventually, the final two.

A  woman of substance, she is most remembered for impressing the judges and audiences  worldwide  with  her  simple  yet  heartfelt  answer in the Miss Universe Top  Five  Q&A  portion:  “Being  Miss Universe is not just about knowing  how  to speak  a  specific  language,  it's  about  being able to influence and inspire other people. As long as your heart is deserving and you have a strong mind to show to people, then you can be Miss Universe.”

While USA went on to win the title, there is no doubt that Janine is the true winner in the hearts and minds of her countrymen.

So with her title firmly secured, it is evident that Janine’s strong will, sheer determination to succeed, and heart and passion for God make her the best ambassador for women, beauty, and class. And leading global beauty company Avon is right to notice her and make her its newest endorser for its fragrance, color, fashion jewelry, and watch lines.

“Avon is a brand I’ve known and patronized for years,” Janine says. “But more than the beauty products it offers Filipina women, I’m also impressed with the company’s  efforts  to  provide  earning  opportunities  for its Representatives,  and take  part  in  addressing  causes such as the fight against domestic violence and breast cancer.”

The 5’8” 23-year-old morena stunner from Bataan, who is also a licensed pharmacist and cum laude graduate from the University of Santo Tomas, admits that it wasn’t in her plans to become a beauty queen. But after learning that she was being considered for Bb. Pilipinas, she put her heart, mind, and soul to make her country proud.

Avon  Senior Vice President and President for Asia Pacific and Philippines, Bob Briddon, says of Janine:  “More than representing the Philippines in the Miss Universe Pageant, which she did very well, Janine also represents what Avon stands  for: beauty  inside  and  out.”   He adds, “She also inspires and influences others to make a difference so naturally, we are more than happy and proud to welcome her to the Avon family.”

Perhaps what adds to Janine’s appeal is her strong yet grounded characteristic. An active user of social media, Janine interacts with her followers on Twitter where, like most of us, she enjoys posting pictures of family, friends, and food.

Janine adds that fans and supporters also tell her via social networking sites how much her achievement has inspired them. While unsure at first how to respond to such praises, Janine has now come to see her position as a way to proactively encourage and motivate others to pursue their dreams.

“Social media is very powerful because the extent of your influence reaches different parts of the world,” Janine says.

When asked what advice she would give young ladies who wish to follow in her footsteps, she still answers with the same sentiment and the same strong conviction: “It’s going to be a tough task. But with hard work, determination, and a strong faith and relationship with God, you can do it.”

Barely two months into carrying out her new responsibilities as a reigning beauty queen, Janine is just beginning to savor the moment.

“Right now, I’m enjoying it so much. I really, really love what I’m doing,” she enthuses, smiling.

“I’m very much honored to be part of the Avon family,” Janine states. “I hope  to  put my  influence  to  good use by making the brand—not just its products,  but  its message  for  women  and the causes it stands for—more accessible  and  relatable to  Filipina  women  through  my  own  personal connection to Avon.”

Beyond Concealer: 6 Makeup Ideas to Make You Look More Awake

Concealer alone won't make you look beautifully rested. (In fact, too much draws attention to tired eyes.) Here are six ways to wake up your look; each one lets you fake an extra hour of sleep.

◘  Curl Your Lashes

When your lashes are upturned, your eyes look more open. For the biggest payoff, squeeze a lash curler once at your lashline, once in the middle of your lashes and once at the ends. Enhance the effect—and seal the curl—with a layer of lengthening mascara.

◘  Layer Your Liner

Lining your upper lashes with two different tones—one deep, one vibrant—will counteract shadows underneath your eyes and make the whites look brighter. First, use a dark brown or black pencil eyeliner. Top it with a liner in a vibrant jewel tone, like a sapphire blue or emerald green.

◘ Line Your Lower Lashes

But don't use black. To make your eyes look bigger and brighter, trace a nude eyeliner (like Tarte EmphasEYES™ Inner Rim Brightener, $18; Sephora.com) on the inner rims of your lower lashline. "Make sure the liner is a beige-y color and not too white," says Tim Quinn, celebrity makeup artist for Giorgio Armani Beauty. "Beige looks more natural and does a better job of neutralizing redness in or around the eyes."

◘ Build Up Your Brows

Full, softly arched brows make your eyelids look lifted, and draw attention up and away from undereye puffiness and dark circles. Use short, feathery strokes to fill in your brows with a pencil (a taupe shade works on most brow colors and skin tones) and then brush them up and out with a spoolie brush. Dior's Diorshow Brow Styler Ultra-Fine Precision Brow Pencil ($29, Sephora.com) is a favorite among makeup artists. "The texture is dry enough to stay put all day, the universal color really does work on everyone, and it has a spoolie on one end," makeup artist Troy Surratt says.

◘ Even Out Your Complexion

A sheer, dewy foundation can do more than a concealer alone to make you look beautifully awake. Case in point: An actress we recently worked with arrived at our O shoot straight from a red-eye flight—yet looked as if she'd just woken from a long, delicious nap. She credited a layer of Koh Gen Do Aqua Foundation ($62, KohGenDoCosmetics.com). "It's luminous and totally imperceptible," she raved. "Even though it's light, it evens out redness and discoloration, and makes me look instantly refreshed."

◘ Wear Blush

A pop of color on your cheekbones brightens your entire face and distracts from shadows underneath your eyes. Look for a rosy blush with a hint of gold to counteract blue tones in your undereye circles. (Avoid shades that are too orange, which can make eyes look tired.) "There's a reason why Nars Orgasm Blush is so incredibly popular—that shade of slightly peachy pink, flecked with gold, makes almost everyone look vibrant," says one makeup artist (who shall remain nameless because he works for another brand).

Color Burst: Sunny summer makeup

MANILA, Philippines - The "Amihan" is keeping our nights (and most days) cool, but we know that summer is just around the corner.

Beauty expert and makeup artist Kris Bacani talks summer makeup with Rappler, and gives tips on how to wear color that's right for you.

Get the look

Here's how to get model Che's look, along with Kris's product suggestions:

1. Put a thin layer of foundation and lightly set with powder. Use:

Mary Kay Timewise Foundation
Makeup Designory loose powder in Buttercream
2. Brows need not be heavily defined but make sure they're well groomed. Use:

MAC Browset in Girl Boy
3. Enhance the eyes with a hint of cool brown shimmer on the lids and define lashline and eyelashes with black eyeliner and mascara. Use:

The shades Chopper and Suspect from the Urban Decay Naked 2 eyeshadow palette
Maybelline Black Gel Liner
Maybelline Volume Express Cat Eyes Mascara
4. Put shimmery pink blush on the apples of the cheeks. Use:

Mary Kay powder blush in Strawberry Creme

5. Go crazy with bright, neon-like lip colors. Use:

Lush Emotional Brilliance lippies in Drive, Believe, Bubbly, Passionate, and Decisive

Summer makeup palette for the eyes, cheeks, and lips

1. For fair skin - Cool and bright pinks on the eyes, cheeks, or lips

2. For morena skin - Bronze shades never go out of style. For a pop of color, opt for jewel tones on the eyes.

"Emerald is Pantone's color of the year so summer is the perfect time to try it out!" says Kris.

What to remember when buying summer makeup

1. For foundation, make sure that the formula is lightweight. "Go for sheer, liquid types," says Kris.

2. For eye products like eyeliner and mascara, waterproof types are a must to avoid smudging and getting "raccoon eyes."

Makeup will stay and look fresh longer if...

"You put makeup primer after moisturizing," says Kris. "So makeup will have extra staying power and will most likely stay fresh the whole day."

And when it's time to retouch, Kris advises the use of oil control film before retouching to prevent caking "since it will be extra hot and skin will be more likely to produce oil."

But don't retouch too often or risk ending up with makeup that's too obvious for comfort. According to Kris, retouching twice a day should be just right: during lunchtime and, if going out at night, after work hours.

The secret to summer skincare

"Sunblock, sunblock, sunblock!" says Kris. "Since we'll be spending more time outdoors, sun protection should be amped up."

Use a sunblock that protects against the full spectrum of skin harming light such as UVA, UVB, infrared, and visible light. "I recommend VMV Hypoallergenics Armada Face Cover SPF 45," says Kris.

Make water your best friend

"Water loss increases during the summer season as we tend to perspire more. it is important that we properly hydrate by drinking water to prevent our skin from drying and cracking," says Kris.

Since it will also be extra humid, you can switch to moisturizers with lighter formulations. You can also carry around a face mist so you can rehydrate your skin anytime during the day.
